ANS Testing

Autonomic Nervous System Testing.

What Causes Autonomic Dysfunction?

Every moment of every day our senses are alive to the world. Those senses experience physiological responses when exposed to various stimuli. When we experience a dysfunction in the autonomic nervous system, those responses are disrupted, causing autonomic dysfunction (also called autonomic neuropathy or dysautonomia). Autonomic Nervous System Testing is an effective means of assessing the degree of any dysfunction, which is vital for your health, treatment, and longevity.

ANS testing aid in localizing the dysfunction you are experiencing, giving a much narrower view of the issue for differential diagnosis, and frequently enabling a clearer and more accurate diagnosis.

Your autonomic nervous system has two elements, the sympathetic autonomic nervous system (or SANS) and the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system (or PANS). Together these control a range of functions including:

ANS Testing

The majority of your organs include nerves coming from both the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. ANS testing can include a range of different elements as a result, and there is no standard battery of tests given to all patients. The specific form of your testing will depend on your unique needs. You can, however, expect it to include tests of your:

  • Vasomotor adrenergic function – this is the core method used to evaluate patients with orthostatic hypotension, syncope, postural dizziness or postural tachycardia syndrome.
  • Cardiovagal function.
  • Sudomotor function (sweat testing).
