Mesotherapy
Mesotherapy is a technique that uses injections of vitamins, enzymes, hormones, and plant extracts to rejuvenate and tighten skin, as well as remove excess fat.
The truth is, even though we should strive to take care of ourselves with a healthy lifestyle, these natural methods often fall short of our expectations — even if we’re giving it 100% effort. Many of us have small pockets of stubborn fat because we’re genetically programmed to accumulate fat cells in those areas. That kind of fat can be hard to get rid of without a helping hand.
Mesotherapy can eliminate fatty deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. The same technique can also be used for skin rejuvenation and anti-aging, making it a versatile solution with both inner and outer benefits.
What Are Mesotherapy Injections?
Mesotherapy is a minimally invasive technique involving injections of vitamins, minerals, plant extracts, enzymes and other targeted ingredients. In 1952, a French doctor named Michel Pistor developed the technique to relieve pain. “Meso” refers to the middle of the skin, where the injections are administered.
Although mesotherapy is widely used in Europe, it is a relatively new treatment option in the United States. It joins the rapidly growing selection of low-downtime injectable treatments available for aesthetics and wellness.
What Are the Benefits of Mesotherapy?
At BluVida, we primarily use mesotherapy for spot fat reduction. Our formula contains a cocktail of ingredients that help remove fat in common trouble spots like:
- Upper and lower abdomen
- Hips
- Thighs
- Under the buttocks
- Love handles
- Upper arms
- Chin
- Bra band
The process of breaking down fat is called lipolysis. The ingredients in the injection break fat cells into tiny particles. Within a few weeks, those particles are excreted through the body’s natural waste elimination system. Mesotherapy is not a treatment for overall weight loss, but it can target localized fat deposits in a way diet and exercise cannot.
How Does Mesotherapy Compare to Liposuction?
Liposuction permanently removes fat cells in a surgical procedure done under anesthesia. Surgeons perform liposuction by inserting a thin, blunt tube called a cannula through small incisions, and then suctioning out the fat with an attached surgical vacuum. Liposuction is an efficient way to remove unwanted fat, but it comes with the recovery time, discomfort, risks and cost of a surgical procedure.
Mesotherapy may be considered a nonsurgical alternative to liposuction. It requires no incisions, and because it is less invasive, it involves less discomfort and downtime. Another key difference between mesotherapy and liposuction is that mesotherapy can improve cellulite. Liposuction has no effect on cellulite, and in fact, can sometimes make existing cellulite appear worse.
How Is Mesotherapy Used for Skin Rejuvenation?
Our skin is protected by an outer layer called the epidermis (or, more specifically, the stratum corneum of the epidermis). This prevents most topical products from penetrating to the level of the skin where they are designed to work, reducing their efficacy. Microchannel mesotherapy uses tiny needles to penetrate the stratum corneum and deliver therapeutic substances below the skin surface.
Microchannel mesotherapy is useful for:
- Improving skin texture
- Smoothing wrinkles and fine lines
- Minimizing acne and scarring
- Decreasing pore visibility
- Lightening hyperpigmentation
- Stimulating collagen production
- Enhancing skin radiance and hydration
- Tightening the skin
Various blends of therapeutic agents can be used in microchannel mesotherapy, depending on the concerns you wish to treat.
AQUAGOLD® Fine Touch™ is a novel microchanneling technology designed to comfortably and effectively deliver bioactive compounds into the skin. The device features 20 gold-plated micro-needles, each one thinner than a human hair. This single-use disposable applicator contains a reservoir that is filled with ingredients tailored to your specific skin needs. AQUAGOLD® Fine Touch™ is our device of choice for microchannel mesotherapy.
What Is the Difference Between Mesotherapy and Microneedling?
Mesotherapy and microneedling both use small needles to trigger a response in the lower layers of the skin, but there are critical differences between the two treatments.
Microneedling improves various skin imperfections by stimulating collagen production. The needles create tiny injuries in the skin that cause it to heal itself by producing more collagen. There are no injections and no active ingredients — microneedling works by enhancing the body’s own natural healing process.
The purpose of mesotherapy is to inject a mix of active ingredients into the skin layer where they can be most effective. What ingredients are included relies on what is being treated; different cocktails are used for different concerns. As a skin rejuvenation treatment, mesotherapy is useful for improving loose skin, fine lines, dullness and dehydration.
We sometimes combine mesotherapy and microneedling to target skin laxity. For the right candidate, bringing these two treatments together can yield better improvements than either treatment individually.
Is Mesotherapy Painful?
Pain always depends on the individual patient’s tolerance. Any treatment involving injections can be a little uncomfortable, but most people handle mesotherapy well. A topical anesthetic can be applied at the start of your appointment to ensure you are as comfortable as possible during the injections.
What Is the Recovery From Mesotherapy Like?
Temporary side effects from mesotherapy injections may include slight swelling, bruising, redness, stinging or tenderness in the treated area. An over-the-counter pain reliever should be adequate to manage any discomfort. Your provider will inform you of any recommended activity restrictions or aftercare instructions.
Like Botox and many other injectable treatments, mesotherapy does not have downtime requirements. Many people return to their regular activities right away, including work, with none the wiser. With quick and convenient appointments and no required downtime, mesotherapy is a true lunchtime treatment.
How Long Does It Take to See Results From Mesotherapy?
Benefits from mesotherapy fat reduction injections are not apparent right away. Your body needs time to process the treated fat cells and flush them out. This process takes several weeks, and it may take several injection sessions to achieve your ultimate goals. Two to four treatments, spaced at intervals recommended by your provider, typically produce the best results. Be sure to plan ahead if you have an important event coming up.
How Long Do Mesotherapy Results Last?
Mesotherapy is considered permanent. The fat cells it breaks down will not regrow. However, that doesn’t mean you can stop being attentive to your diet and fitness routine. The fat cells that remain in your body can still accumulate fat, so it’s possible to gain weight if you lead an unhealthy lifestyle. Results can also be affected by pregnancy. You may find that maintenance treatments once or twice per year help keep you looking and feeling your best.
